teacher gift

What to get Teacher for the Holidays?

I knew this was little honey's first teacher and I wanted to get her something. I didn't know what. But knew we don't have a lot of money to spend so I knew it had to be homemade. Well I searched and searched the internet for some cute ideas. I found quite a lot of ideas. Very excited for the upcoming summer break to share more.
But for Winter/Christmas I needed something. This is what I found...

Sorry it is a little hard to read but this a pair of gloves and a note that reads

reaching out
Thank you for what you
do with your hands.

Isn't that the sweetest thing you've ever seen?? I loved it! And anyone can do this!! No sewing or crafty skills required!! I found it at Poppies at Play. They have some really neat gift ideas and decorating ideas! I just wish I had their neat fonts! I searched the internet but couldn't find the exact one she used for the LOVING. Oh well!

I am so excited I found their blog! Thanks ladies for the great teacher gift idea and other ideas that I am still finding on your site!!!

One more gift done!!!

still here...

OK a little slow on posts this month.

I am still a little sick. I know, I know. I am finally going to the doctor today.

Little honey had his Christmas program at school. He was a hoot! 80% of the time he was saluting us like a little soldier! I have no idea how that started! The rest of the time he was being silly as seen below in the pic -

Well, Little honey turned 4 last week! It has been an amazing four years! I can't believe he has been in our lives that long! Time sure flies by when your having fun!! To read more about our adoption experience go HERE.

Well hubby and I pondered and pondered what to get little honey. We didn't want to spend much and he already has too many toys! So momma found a little Hot Wheel race track on sale!! Yipee!!

And momma found.....

a little puppy! His name is Archie. I found him at the pound in K.C. down the street from the stadium. And he was a sponsered adoption so we didn't have to pay the normal adoption fee!! It was definately meant to be! I have been looking for about a month to find the "right" puppy or dog. Believe me we found him! He is such a lover and cuddler!

Little honey is Very Happy!

Just look at those Big Ears!! He is part beagle and hound! I just love to rub his ears - they are so soft!!

Junior - our other dog is still not used to the new puppy. He is a little hesitant. But he is also 9 years old and pretty set in his ways. I tried to get a picture of the two dogs together - but Junior wasn't having that! Maybe in a few weeks I will post one.

Little honey also got the Little People Nativity Set from Grandma and Poppie! Thanks guys! He loves to play with it and make it sing. It is really neat - I would suggest getting it for your little honeys if you don't already have it!

Ok - off to the doctor now...

Been Sick....

I hate it when that happens! I have been sick with a Horrible Head Cold all week! Sniffing and Sneezing and starting to cough. Haven't gotten a thing done.
Behind on my posts.
Behind on my Christmas gift making.
Behind on Decorating for Christmas - although I did manage to get the outside Christmas trees up last week right as I was feeling the pain in my head. And I did get our Christmas tree up inside - but No decorations or lights on yet. Just a lone pine tree in the corner of the living room. Bare naked!!

Saturday I did manage to take little honey to the Small Mall. Do you remember going to those as a child? I don't remember it being called a small mall but it was a fun place to shop, with my money money my parents gave me to shop with and I could buy what ever I wanted for them!

I don't remember much of what I bought but I did enjoy picking things out and getting them wrapped and hiding them under the tree until Christmas. I  remember one year I bought - a plastic onion with a weird face that you put baking soda in to hide the weird onion smell and it went in the fridge. Of course this brilliant gift was for my mom. I don't think she remembers getting it, but I was so proud to give it to her.

I think I also got her a kitchen timer another year - and guess what she STILL HAS IT!!! I know I give you a hard time about this mom. But it is funny! I know you have had the thing at least 25 years! At least! and the silly thing is still working - well at least I hope it is if she still has it!

Well Little honey didn't quite understand the purpose of shopping on his own with said money. Plus he hadn't had a nap that day which didn't help. So momma had to go shopping with him and help pick out presents. Lucky too! Cuz otherwise daddy would have gotten a trailer hitch cover that was the shape of a shot gun shell! I won't give the details of the gifts. I will wait til Christmas to show you!!

Hope your week has been better than mine!

Another Gift completed!

Well as I mentioned in my other gift post I have already completed one gift!

Here is a glimpse of what I made -

Knitted dishcloths for male cousin who just got his first house! Notice the manly colors I picked. He is into hunting and camo so I thought it was only fitting!

I did add a little something extra. I had just enough yarn left to make a little scrubbie. I added a large wooden button. I bet you are wondering WHY? well I found this somewhere on the internet and I can't find out where. But the button is used as a scraper! Like how you would use a wooden spoon! Isn't that the neatest idea ever? So I had to use it! I am really trying to go green and be as useful as I can.

The next step will be to find  a unique way to wrap his gift. Have you ever thought of tin cans? You know the kind you have left over from canned veggies.

I found this on The Idea Room Cute idea to save your cans and have the recipient open them! Someone else who commented on her blog mentioned using the pop top cans like Cambell's soup and open the bottom so the recipient can open it with the pop top! That sounds like a good idea.
You need a special can opener like a smooth edge can opener that cuts the lid off around the side and makes a little lid.
Put your special gift in - whatever fits. Glue on the lid, wrap some pretty paper around the can and Voila!

I tried it with my can opener - but my can opener is different than hers - and I don't want to go out and get a new one! I can't get the lid to stay glued on - and I have tried 3 different types of glue. Just not enough can to hold onto.   Well off to find another way to wrap it!!

One more done! 24 to go!!
So what are your special holiday gifts? Are you making anything? Please let me know!

That time of year again...

So this is the card I got today hubby. Yes he makes me cards that are - what is the word - "special"! I have nothing else to say about it.

Except at least he did remember the day. For the first 8 years of our marriage he could not remember what day my birthday was on. I would drill him all the time at random times of the year. Some Tuesday in July I would look at him and say - hey when is my birthday? He would mumble "November twenty...first." NOPE. "November twenty...ninth?" Nope.  "I dunno - I just know it is around Thanksgiving" Great - my hubby only knows my birthday is around Thanksgiving!

So finally he memorized it or looked at my license? That is why the date is written on my card - to proove to me he remembered! Finally! It took over nine years!

And he is not teaching my son very well either. No card from my son. No present from him. Aren't dad's supposed to get on the ball at some time and do something for the mommy on her special days like her birthday and mother's day? Don't even get me started on Mother's day this year. Big FLOP! My poor son. I am just trying to make a good impression on him for his daddy's birthday and Father's day in hopes he will learn something and want to do it for my day. One can only HOPE.

So it doesn't seem like my birthday. This has been a weird year. Usually Thanksgiving ushers my day in, but this year I haven't seen my parents all week. They went to celebrate Thanksgiving with my sis in GA.
Nothing special is going on today. Since we are trying to pay off bills, no special celebrations will be happening. I'm just not feeling it. Maybe it is becuase I am getting older? EEEK! Don't say that!

Well hope you had a great Thanksgiving and nothing happened to you that happened to me last year. I still have a small scar to remember the day. Read about  Last year's Thanksgiving Accident Here. So I guess I should be thankful!! I still have all of my fingers!!

Hope you have a great day.

First Gifts!

Here is a little craft and mini tutorial for an easy, fun gift for a little girl/tween  in your life. This first one I made for hubby's cousin. I think this will be my last year to make her anything cutesy as she will soon be a TEEN!

I found this idea in Family Fun magazine - they found it on a blog goody-goody. Super CUTE! She used different fabrics on each section of her letter - but for my first one I made the letter "C" so not as easy to mix fabrics. Also they state their letters are about 5 -6 inches tall! HA! I made mine 2 Feet tall!! Got To Be BOLD I say!!

Here is what I did. Since we are budgeting I am really trying NOT to buy any more supplies. I didn't have any of the paper wrapped floral wire so I improvised. Hubby had some wire that wasn't too thick - still bendable. After I bent it into the shape I wanted, I wrapped it in floral tape I had lying around. I don't think this is required- but it did bulk up the wire and help the fabric to stay on better. Without the sticky of the tape I think the fabric would have just slipped off my wire.

I cut my fabric in strips about one inch wide. I started at one end with a little hot glue and started wrapping the fabric strips around and around. When one ended I put a little dab of glue and then started another strip.

Here is little honey with the extra supplies, flowers, buttons, lace and ribbon. He really had fun helping me!

And here is the final view -

I just got done with a letter "A" and a letter "B" for my neices. Funny -  I didn't realize I would be making ABC's for Christmas until now!!!

WooHoo! Three Gifts done! Three out of 28 gifts DONE!! Now 25 to go...
I will keep you posted on my next completed gifts soon!
What do you think?

Special Thanksgiving Dessert

My Life as JulieMom is having a Holiday Recipe Party this week. As most of you know I am not much of a cook. I get by with the basics. I am a meat and potatoe girl, no frills, just food to fill my tummy. So I didn't plan on joining - except she made me  but I thought I would be nice and share. Go over and check out the recipes!

So here is my special secret dessert for an easy, semi-homemade dessert using one of my favorite treats.

No I don't just plan on opening the box and sharing. I am gonna share a recipe that uses Twinkies in it! Surprised you with that one, huh? I know, I know. You are scratching your head wondering how is she going to make twinkies into something else? They are already perfect as is! Well not so fast...

Here is a recipe for Twinkie Tiramisu or Layered Pumpkin Dessert (I think the Tiramisu sounds more exotic!)

1 package of Hostess Twinkies ( 10 Twinkies)
1 package ( 8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 container (8 oz) Whip topping, thawed, divided (like cool whip)
2 packages (3.4 oz each) instant vanilla pudding
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice  (plus extra to sprinkle on top)
1 cup milk

Slice Twinkies in half lengthwise and place cream side up, in single layer in 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
Using Mixer, blend together cream cheese, powdered sugar and 1/2 of whipped topping until smooth.
Spread evenly over Twinkies.

Combine pudding mixes, pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice and milk. Whisk until well blended and layer over cream cheese mixture.
Carefully soread reamining whipped topping over pumpkin.
Lightly sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.
Refrigerate several hours and then ENJOY!!!

There. This is probably the only recipe I will have on my blog. Take it. Cherish it. Enjoy it!

Christmas Gifts

Ok so I have checked my list and I have 28 gifts that I need to get for Christmas! And that is not including my hubby or my son! So at least 30 are needed!!! Each year I freak out because we need to get so many! My hubby's family gets together every year - which I LOVE! But getting presents for all of the cousins is getting harder and harder. Especially since they are getting older and getting boyfriends and getting married! So the list keeps getting bigger! I should really mention drawing names - at least for us cousins! What a great idea! Hello out there - can us cousins do that next year, PLEASE???

What ever happened to just remembering the day. And the reason why we celebrate Christmas. Why is it always about presents? I wish we could all just get together and celebrate family. Have a big dinner and just enjoy one another??

OK I am done ranting... on to the presents...

This year we are on a really tight budget. So most of my gifts will be handmade by me. I have about half of them planned out and one already completed!!! YEAH!!! One down and 27 to go!! WOOHOO!! I should start a countdown! I will try and post most of them - but I know some little eyes are reading and I have to hide some of them!!!

Also little honey is only getting one gift from us (store bought) for his birthday on Dec. 17th ( I am making a few smaller things he will enjoy) and one store bought gift for Christmas. He has WAY TOO MANY TOYS!!! I do not want to add to that list. And most of the people on my #28 list will be getting him a toy for both occasions so he will have WAY MORE than he needs!

But...I did have to break my rule of only one gift. I found a great bargain at Target that I couldn't pass up. A Mr. Potato Head Santa Spud for .99!! Thanks Cutting Coupons in KC!! See I told you she has some good info!!

Can you believe it! I googled it and it is selling on Amazon for over $11! and you would still need to pay shipping!! It is a regular size Mr. Potato Head!
OK here is the lowdown on how to get one. Go HERE to print off a coupon. You will have to scroll thru the pages to find the $5.00 off Hasbro Mr. Potato Spud coupon. There is another one for $3 off a regular, but this is a SPUD. Then go to Target and get one. They are regular price $5.99. So all you pay is .99 + tax! You can print the coupon twice and get two!!! They are a little hard to find - if you go to a regular Target store they are by the Christmas trees and the other Christmas goodies. If you go to a Super Target it is up front by the food section, in front of the pharmacy. You know where they put the Halloween Candy - hidden. I had to ask an associate - and we still couldn't find them. But he was able to locate them in the stock room and just got them for me!
I got one for little honey and one for my niece! ?Yeah! Her present is almost complete! I am making her something special for her room - more on that later...

So run out and get a little bargain!

I love entering blog giveaways - heck I love any giveaways. But I seem to have pretty good luck with blog ones. In October I won TWO!! Hard to believe as I usually don't win anything! But of course I still enter them!!

The first contest I won was from Cutting Coupons in KC. This is a great blog for you girls who live near me. She lists deals and coupons for the stores we actuall have near us! And she has some good ideas to save money! Go check her out.

I won a Yoga mat with carrying case, free yogurt from Yoplait, and a book - "Full of Life" signed by the author Nancy O'Dell. (you know the blonde on Entertainment Tongiht!). What a Fun Prize pack!!

The second thing I won was this Hair Prettie from Daisy Bookworm. She just opened an Etsy shop and would love for you to go visit her! I am loving the crochet headband! Cute!

Sometime I need to learn how to Crochet! I will just have to add it to my list of things to do...I think I now have 263 things on the list. One at a time...One at a time!!

Do you like to enter contests? Have you ever won anything? Let me know - no matter how crazy it is!!

My Little Pony...I mean Honey...

So last night I went to my Ladies Group. Little honey went with me cuz daddy had to work. It wasn't a big deal - except I knew he wouldn't like the pot luck dinner we were gonna eat. So I left a little early and drove thru McDonald's. My favorite fast food restuarant.

As we were pulling up to the order box at the drive thru, little honey is getting hysterical in the back seat..."MOMMA, MOMMA, I WANT THE PONY". Pony, what pony? We are here to get him chicky and fries, there are no ponies here! What was he thinking?

WELL, apparently WHAT WAS MOMMA THINKING? There are ponies at Mc'D's! My Little Pony to be exact - and PINK no less. A PINK PONY was the only thing that little honey wanted. So I ordered a GIRL happy meal - which I don't think I have ever done since having my son and never thought I would. BUT, times are a changing, and sometimes little boys want Pink Ponies.

My only fear was that I order a girl happy meal. They give me a pony. And it won't be PINK. So I tried to prepare little honey with the fact that it could be purple or red or another color. They always do that - you know, show one product and you always get a different one. As we inched our way closer to the pick up window...another fear popped in my head...

What if they look thru our car window and see that I don't have a girl in the car and they refuse to give me a PONY????? So I quickly rolled up the back window so he couldn't be seen.

I got the bag..opened it up...and guess what we got??

A PINK PONY!!! WOOHOO!! Momma is safe! But when little honey saw that it came with a little comb - he didn't want it. Of course we were already 3 blocks away from Mc'D's. He wanted me to turn around so we could take the little comb back! What a little rascal!! As I was reaching out my hand to take the comb - he decided it might be a good idea to keep it!

The rest of the night went off without a hitch. Little honey was having a blast combing the mane of Pink Pony - which by the way he named "Pinky".

Now...I just have to worry about what daddy will say when he finds out I got little honey a PINK PONY!!!

I have been away from the blogging world for a while.

Helping out at the adoption agency. Busy time - lots of birthmoms and in need of more families. So I've been busy making calls. I miss my honey during the day - but I am really enjoying the paycheck!! Hoping they will be busy for a while (since the holidays are coming and the extra $$ will be nice for traveling and gifts). I'm only working two days a week, but they are very long days when little honey is not around.

Speaking of gifts... notice my new addition to the side bar ->
A countdown to CHRISTMAS!!! There are only 44 days left to Christmas!! So I need to step up the pace for our gifts. I am going to try and make the majority of our gifts(I already have a few completed and need to write tutorials on them) and many, many more ideas! I will keep you updated - I promise!

Hope you are having a great day!

New project for our dog door

If you own a dog you might have a dog door like we do. Ours is located in the basement in the third garage. It is unfinished, but still connected to our house! As the weather is getting colder and colder everyday, I could feel the draft coming from the dog door. My sewing machines and craft tables are on the other side of the basement and VERY cold!! We have a metal door that slides in place over the dog door, but it is mainly to keep the dog in or out - NOT for weather proofing! There is about a one inch space between the dog door and the metal door. So I had an idea to make a  'cushion insulator' (if you will for lack of a better name) to help insulate this gap.

This is what I came up with ~

Pretty, huh??? Don't ya just love the animal print? It is just scrap fabric from some old pillows I had. Just reused it so I wouldn't waste any of my good fabric. You're jealous - I know!

Well I made a little slide show of how I created this little insulator - in case you want to make one to!
This is the before - I know, the dog door is a little dirty! But that is for another day!

First I cut a piece of 1 inch foam I had left over from some project. I cut it a little smaller than the measurement of our dog door.

Then I measured the fabric and cut it just a little bit bigger than my foam piece. Sewed around three sides and finished the edges.

After putting the cover on the foam - it should fit snug. I hand sewed the bottom edge of the cover. Tada! - here is the finished insulator ~

I just pushed it in place before putting the metal door cover on.

Done! And No more drafts!! I LOVE IT!! This was so easy to make and will help save us money this winter!!
And this is what Junior did while I fixed his doggy door ~

Isn't he so cute sleeping on my pillows!! UGH!!! Well, at least I remembered to cover the couch with an old sheet first!!

Hope you liked it!

What do you plan on doing this winter to help save money on electric bills? Help give me some other ideas!!

Saturday fun...

Well Saturday we had a blast - cold and windy - but we had fun nun the less! A local paving company supported a community festival with activities, blow up slides and BIG TRUCKS!!!! Poppy found the info in the local paper and called to let us know  - about 10 minutes before it started! So off we rushed to see the big trucks!! Little honey had SOOOO much fun!!

So did Mommy!

and looks like Grandma and Poppy did too!

They had a bus that drove you thru the rock quary and showed them breaking up the rock and putting it in the dump trucks to take to the CRUSHER! I wish I would have taken a picture of the quary - my all time dream is to one day swim in a "Quary LAKE" that is created after they dig and drill. I don't know why this fascinates me so, maybe it is the pretty blue green of the water and how pretty it looks with rock walls all around. Maybe it is the thrill of the jump off the top of the rock wall down into the water?? Maybe it is hollywood portraying the fun in the movies? I dunno - but I want to do it someday before I die!

On with our day...They took us to the lab to see what is involved in quality control -

Who knew so much went into ROCKS?? This is all the rocks/steps that go into pavement! Six types and also the oil! WOW! I love to learn something new every day!
Little honey really enjoyed climbing in and on the trucks!

We climbed the huge slide and had an incident -

Mommy got stuck at the bottom of the first slide!!!

I hate it when that happens! But little honey helped me up! It was all fun!
Thanks Apac for the Fun day! I wanted to email them and tell them the blast we had - but couldn't even find their website. Oh well! If anyone finds it (the local Olathe site) please let me know!

Holy Carrot Batman!!

Can you believe the size of this carrot?? I pulled this from my garden yesterday and it is HUGE!

That is a regular carrot from the grocery store on the left. It is about 7 inches long and about 1 inch diameter. My carrot is about 5 inches long and over 3 inches in diameter!!! I can't believe it! Plus I have about 6 more out in the garden I still need to pull!

It was pretty tasty, too! I just kept slicing and slicing. It didn't seem like it would ever end!!

Here is a side view ~

Well Happy Saturday to you!! Don't forget to come back on Sunday to find out about my GIVEAWAY!!!
